WHO WE ARE
OUR MISSION
Building the Road Home strives to provide emergency housing or transitional
housing to men, women, children, or families that find themselves without
shelter in the Saint Louis Metropolitan area. Through community resources
and connections, our end game is to provide everyone with a stable home.
WHAT WE DO
We provide a variety of homeless prevention, outreach services, emergency
shelter, and transitional housing options to families and individuals that
promote self-sufficiency and lessen the chances of future homeless episodes.
OUR VALUES
We welcome everyone without bias or judgment as we share in their journey
to finding sustainable housing and promoting well-being and a sense of place;
helping them take charge of their own lives as they build trust in themselves
and our staff as we formulate a plan to help them end their homelessness,
permanently.
HOW WE STARTED
Although she never actually lived on the streets, Michelle Echols,
experienced homelessness, as she found herself, on a few
occasions, without a place of her own to live. Thankfully, she
had good friends and family that would allow her to crash on
their couches, for a limited amount of time, until she could find
a more stable situation.
When Michelle did finally land on her feet and secured a home
of her own, she was filled with gratitude, but also sorrow, as she
thought of the thousands of homeless men, women, children,
and families who have nowhere to go and have to survive life
on the streets everyday.
Yet, Michelle, didn’t wallow in pity, she decided then and there to do something about
the plight of the homeless. She vowed to help as many people as she could to get off
the streets, if even for just one night, which is why she founded the non- profit,
Building the Road Home, to provide emergency shelter and transitional housing to
those in need.
Building the Road home is still in its infancy, but with the help from a competent and
resourceful board, generous donors, and kind and resilient volunteers, Michelle’s
vision for Building the Road Home to end homelessness in the Saint Louis
Metropolitan area, and, hopefully, one day, the world, will come to fruition.
